The Skill of a Roofer is Deeper than the Tiles

by | Apr 8, 2014 | Construction and Maintenance

In years gone by a roofer was a tradesman with a skill in thatching, tiling, reed-roofing, and any other type of roofing that required a certain and specific level of skill. In those days, young boys were taught the trade by their fathers so that they could enter the same profession as men. If they had no father they could apply to become an apprentice and be taken under the wind of a professional who taught them.

To provide roofing services in Livingston, or any other town or city in Scotland or within the United Kingdom, a person must at least have some training in the ways of laying a roof. Because there are so many different types of materials that are used for roofing these days, it is necessary to either have a skill in all of them or to choose a specialist area in which you might concentrate. For instance, thatched roofs are slowly disappearing when it comes to new build homes, but there are still hundreds, if not thousands of them around the country that will need replacing every ten or twenty years. The skills required for these kinds of roofs are slowly dying out because people are no longer learning or using the old skills. However, if a person has the inclination to learn, they could indeed learn thatching as an additional roofing skill that they could then use alongside their tiling skills.

Choosing the Perfect Subject Area of Concentration

Someone new to the roofing trade might still be undecided about the direction they want to take their career and skills. Because money is so important to many people these days it has become not so much about learning a dying skill to keep their skill alive but more about paying ones mortgage or rent. That, of course is vital, but providing a skill and a service that only a handful of people can offer these days, also puts you in the bracket of ‘specialist’ skilled worker and those are rare as chicken’s teeth. If a person chooses to concentrate on more modern examples of roofing, such as tiles, like terracotta or slate, they can learn those skills at a college or as an apprentice. However, apprenticeships are not as common as they used to be.
